The ProgramDelaware Futures prepares disadvantaged youth for college. Students are recruited in the eighth grade. If selected to enroll in Delaware Futures, students participate in a variety of enrichment activities throughout their high school experience. Upon high school graduation, students who meet the academic requirements qualify for partial or full tuition scholarships to one of our ten partnering colleges:Admission considerations for Delaware Futures involve a careful recruitment process. Students interested in being part of Delaware Futures must attend an Information Session and participate in a home interview. Academic record, civic-mindedness, and a desire to attend college are criteria considered when selecting a student. Academic EnrichmentStudents are expected to maintain strong grades in their core classes. Volunteer tutors assist students during weekly homework sessions. Additionally, Delaware Futures partners with a number of local agencies to provide students with PSAT and SAT preparation, study skills, and basic skills enhancers.Adventure-Based LearningEach summer, classes embark on a variety of wilderness trips. Wilderness trips are designed to reinforce the students’ commitment to program goals and to develop skills for life-long learning. The summer experiences provide a point of reference for the academic challenges the students face during the school year.Community ServiceStudents serve in a variety of community service projects. These experiences provide meaning to the students and offer goodwill to the community. Students are expected to complete a number of service projects each year.InternshipsEach student is expected to complete an internship.Group MeetingsStudents attend regular group meetings. Workshops are focused around issues of importance to student development: academic improvement, social issues, environmental concerns, and health initiatives.Counseling/AdvisingDelaware Futures has a staff experienced in assisting economically challenged students.
