Title: Class AdvisorGeneral Responsibilities:Ensures the successful achievement of Delaware Futures' vision, mission, and purpose. The primary responsibility of the position is to continuously improve the programs for students.Job Duties:Meeting with each student in the advisor's class (12-14 students) for a one-hour individual session every other week. Assist in planning and facilitating the weekly group meetings for all students in the program (43 by 1997). These meetings are organized as workshops (not classes) and may entail field trips or visitor presentations. Subjects include life as well as academic skills, and, for juniors and seniors, emphasis will be on planning and preparing for college. Act as a liaison between Delaware Futures and schools. In cases where students are having difficulties with teachers or school administrators, act as a student advocate. Ensure that students are registered for the correct courses for college prep. Provide support for volunteer tutor/mentors and monitor the student-tutor relationships. Do outreach for student internships, and once internships are in place, monitor the intern-sponsor relationship. Plan and host three to four family nights annually. These events are designed to be both social gatherings (pot lucks) and informative to parents. Plan and participate in student summer wilderness trips and occasional weekend trips during the year. This involves driving the van used to transport students. Trips may involve strenuous physical activity. Assist in long-range planning for the Delaware Futures program. Assist in the annual recruitment of the 9th grade class. Network with other community organizations and encourage collaboration and resource sharing. Keep abreast of information on higher education, scholarships, etc., and make this information available to students. Provide a positive role model to students in the program. Present six-month process reports to the director for each student advised. Assist student in the sophomore year in planning and executing a community service project.Qualifications:Skills and experience in educational programming. Undergraduate degree required in a related area. Experience working with low-income youth. Familiarity with the barriers to higher education faced by low-income populations and with the procedures for successful college preparations/admittance.Immediate Supervisor:Executive Director |
